Introduction
This lecture covers three main topics crucial to the field of Artificial Intelligence: Knowledge Engineering, Semantic Networks, and CLIPS (C Language Integrated Production System). We begin by exploring Knowledge Engineering, a discipline that provides structured methodologies for building intelligent systems, drawing significant inspiration from the well-established field of software engineering. We will detail the systematic steps involved in constructing a knowledge base, analogous to the phases in software development.
Next, we will delve into Semantic Networks. These networks offer a graphical and intuitive approach to knowledge representation, serving as a visually oriented alternative to the formalisms of logic, particularly First-Order Logic. We will examine the syntax of semantic networks, focusing on how concepts and relationships are depicted graphically, and discuss the inherent inference mechanisms they support. Furthermore, we will explore the historical context of semantic networks and their surprising connections to the development of Object-Oriented Programming paradigms.
Finally, we will introduce CLIPS (C Language Integrated Production System), a powerful and widely-used rule-based expert system shell. CLIPS provides a practical environment for implementing knowledge-based systems using production rules. We will focus on understanding the syntax of CLIPS rules, the rule execution cycle, including the crucial concepts of agenda and conflict resolution, and the essential commands necessary to build and manipulate expert systems within the CLIPS environment.

Knowledge Engineering
Definition and Relation to Software Engineering
Knowledge Engineering is the systematic and structured approach to building, refining, and maintaining knowledge-based systems. It draws significant inspiration and methodological parallels from the field of software engineering, adapting its principles to the unique challenges of representing and utilizing knowledge in artificial intelligence systems. Just as software engineering provides a disciplined framework for developing robust and scalable software applications, knowledge engineering offers a structured methodology for the creation and evolution of knowledge bases.
At the heart of knowledge engineering lies the task of knowledge base construction. This involves creating what are known as Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS), which are intelligent systems that explicitly rely on a symbolically encoded body of knowledge to perform their tasks. A central activity within knowledge engineering is knowledge representation, the art and science of encoding human knowledge in a format that is both understandable to humans and usable by intelligent agents. Historically, knowledge engineering played a pivotal role in the development of expert systems. In the era of expert systems, knowledge engineers worked closely with domain experts—individuals with specialized knowledge in a particular field (e.g., medical doctors, experienced engineers). Through structured interviews and knowledge elicitation techniques, they extracted the expert’s knowledge and formalized it, often using logic-based formalisms such as first-order logic. This formalized knowledge was then meticulously encoded into a knowledge base, enabling the expert system to perform tasks such as medical diagnosis, equipment troubleshooting, or financial advising.
While the creation of domain-specific knowledge bases, such as those for medical diagnosis, might involve encoding hundreds of axioms, there have also been more ambitious endeavors. Projects like CYC (pronounced "Psych"), aim to construct an encyclopedic knowledge base encompassing a vast amount of general human knowledge, "all of human consensus reality." This represents a knowledge engineering effort on a vastly different scale, requiring the encoding of hundreds of thousands, potentially millions, of axioms and facts. The sheer scale and complexity of such projects necessitate different knowledge acquisition and management techniques compared to building more focused, domain-specific knowledge bases.
Knowledge Base Construction Steps: A Seven-Step Process
Building a knowledge base is typically an iterative and incremental process, much like software development. We will examine a seven-step methodology, derived from established knowledge engineering practices, for constructing domain-specific knowledge bases. It is crucial to recognize that these steps are not strictly linear; the knowledge engineering process often requires revisiting and refining earlier steps as understanding deepens and unforeseen challenges emerge. This iterative nature is essential for developing a robust and accurate knowledge base.
Step 1: Identify the Task and Questions (Purpose)
The initial step in knowledge engineering is to clearly identify the task that the knowledge-based system is intended to perform and, consequently, the types of questions it should be able to answer. This involves defining the scope and purpose of the system, determining what functionalities the intelligent agent will offer and what specific queries the knowledge base must address. This stage is crucial for setting clear objectives and boundaries for the entire knowledge engineering effort.
Example 1. Consider the task of building a knowledge base for the Wumpus World environment. At this stage, we must decide the specific role and capabilities of our knowledge-based system. For instance, should the system:
Act as an autonomous agent, capable of automatically determining a sequence of actions to successfully navigate the Wumpus World, find the gold, and escape without falling into pits or encountering the Wumpus?
Serve as an advisory system for a human player, providing relevant information about the game environment, such as detecting breezes or stenches, and allowing the human player to make informed decisions about actions?
These two objectives are fundamentally different and dictate the design and content of the knowledge base. For the latter, advisory system, the knowledge base needs to be equipped to answer questions such as:
Perception-based queries: "Is there a breeze in the agent’s current location?" or "Is there a stench in the current location?"
Event-based queries: "Did the Wumpus just emit a scream?" (indicating it might have been killed).
State-tracking queries: "What is the agent’s current location?" (This information might be provided by the system itself or tracked externally by the human user).
This initial step of task and question identification is closely related to defining the PEAS (Performance, Environment, Actuators, Sensors) description of an intelligent agent. By clarifying the performance measures, environmental characteristics, available actuators, and sensors, we establish a clear understanding of the intelligent system’s intended interaction with its environment and the knowledge it needs to function effectively.
Step 2: Assemble Relevant Knowledge (Knowledge Acquisition)
The second step is knowledge acquisition, a critical phase focused on gathering and collecting all the pertinent knowledge about the domain for which the knowledge base is being constructed. The nature and complexity of this step vary significantly depending on the domain itself. For relatively simple and well-defined domains, such as the Wumpus World, knowledge acquisition might be straightforward, primarily involving understanding the rules and constraints of the game environment, which are typically explicitly provided. However, for more complex, real-world domains, such as medical diagnosis, knowledge acquisition becomes a significantly more involved and challenging undertaking.
In domains like medical diagnosis, effective knowledge acquisition necessitates extensive and iterative interaction with domain experts. This typically involves engaging in detailed conversations, conducting structured and unstructured interviews, and employing various knowledge elicitation techniques to understand the expert’s problem-solving processes, heuristics, and domain-specific knowledge. The knowledge engineer might spend hours, days, or even weeks collaborating with a medical professional to gain insights into how they approach diagnosis, what factors they consider, and what reasoning processes they employ.
The primary output of the knowledge acquisition phase is usually an informal representation of the acquired knowledge. This representation is deliberately kept informal at this stage, meaning it is not yet formalized using logical notation or a specific knowledge representation language. Instead, it might take the form of interview transcripts, hand-written notes, diagrams, flowcharts, or conceptual maps. The informality is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it facilitates validation with the domain expert. Presenting informal knowledge representations, such as descriptions in natural language or diagrams, allows the expert to easily review, understand, and verify the accuracy and completeness of the captured knowledge. In contrast, presenting complex logical formulas or code directly to a domain expert, who may not be trained in formal logic or programming, would likely be incomprehensible and hinder the validation process. Secondly, informal representations serve as a crucial intermediate step before formalization. They provide a bridge between the expert’s tacit knowledge and its eventual encoding in a knowledge base.
Knowledge acquisition is often considered the most challenging phase in knowledge engineering, mirroring the initial analysis phase in software engineering projects. It requires the knowledge engineer to effectively bridge the gap between their own domain of expertise (typically computer science and AI) and the often vastly different domain of the expert. Understanding the nuances, complexities, and implicit assumptions within the expert’s domain is essential for successful knowledge base construction. The ability to effectively communicate with and learn from domain experts is a key skill for a knowledge engineer.
Step 3: Choose the Vocabulary and Ontology (Conceptualization)
The third step in knowledge engineering is to choose the vocabulary and define the ontology of the domain. This step marks the transition from informal knowledge to a more structured and formal representation. It involves making critical decisions about the fundamental concepts, relationships, and distinctions within the domain that need to be explicitly represented in the knowledge base. Specifically, this step focuses on identifying and defining the predicates, functions, and constants that will constitute the vocabulary of our formal knowledge representation language, typically first-order logic or a related formalism.
The informal knowledge gathered in the previous step provides a rich source of names, terms, and concepts. These informal descriptions serve as the starting point for deriving the formal vocabulary. However, the translation from informal concepts to formal predicates, functions, and constants is not always straightforward and often involves making choices and trade-offs. The knowledge engineer must carefully consider how to best represent the essential aspects of the domain in a formal and computationally tractable manner.
Example 2. Consider the Wumpus World domain again. When defining the vocabulary, we need to make several representational choices:
Representing Pits: We must decide how to represent pits in our formal language. One option is to treat each pit as a distinct object or constant. However, since pits in the Wumpus World are indistinguishable from each other and share the same properties (being dangerous and causing breezes), it is more efficient and conceptually simpler to represent the property of being a pit as a unary predicate, say
Pit(location). This predicate takes a location as an argument and is true if there is a pit at that location. This choice avoids the need to introduce individual constants for each pit, simplifying the ontology.Representing Agent Orientation: The agent’s orientation (direction it is facing) is another aspect to consider. We could represent orientation using a function, such as
Orientation(Agent), which would return a value representing the direction (e.g., North, South, East, West). Alternatively, we could use a predicate, such asIsOriented(Agent, Direction), which would be true if the agent is oriented in a particular direction. The choice between a function and a predicate depends on how we intend to use orientation in our reasoning processes.Representing Location and Adjacency: Locations in the Wumpus World need to be represented, and the concept of adjacency between locations is crucial for defining rules about breezes and stenches. We need to decide how to represent locations (e.g., using coordinates, symbolic names) and how to formally define the
Adjacentrelationship, possibly using predicates or functions that capture spatial relationships.
Beyond purely terminological choices, this step also involves addressing more fundamental conceptual questions about the domain. For example, in the Wumpus World, we need to recognize that the Wumpus’s position is static and does not change over time, while the agent’s location is dynamic and changes as the agent moves. These conceptual distinctions influence how we model the domain and choose our vocabulary.
The outcome of this vocabulary and ontology definition step is a preliminary domain ontology. While the term "vocabulary" is used to emphasize the selection of terms, the process extends beyond mere terminology. It involves making ontological commitments—decisions about what types of things exist in the domain, how they are categorized, and how they relate to each other. This initial ontology provides a blueprint for the formal knowledge representation that will be developed in subsequent steps.
Ontology in Knowledge Engineering
In knowledge engineering, an ontology is more than just a vocabulary list; it is a formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualization. It provides a structured framework for describing the types of objects, concepts, and relationships that exist within a domain of interest. For the Wumpus World, the ontology, while relatively simple, would include concepts such as Pit, Agent, Location, Breeze, Stench, Gold, Wumpus, and relationships like Adjacent, InLocation, HasGold, etc.
For more expansive and general ontologies, such as those pursued by projects like CYC (Psych), the scope is significantly broader. These ontologies aim to capture a comprehensive "theory of everything," at least in terms of common-sense knowledge.
Figure 1 presents a simplified example of an upper ontology hierarchy, inspired by the CYC project. In such general ontologies, concepts are highly abstract and organized hierarchically, aiming to capture fundamental categories of existence and knowledge. For domain-specific knowledge engineering, the ontological focus is narrower, concentrating on the concepts and relationships directly relevant to the task at hand. A key aspect of ontologies is the notion of inheritance. For instance, if "Human" is defined as a subclass of "Animal" in an ontology, then humans inherit properties and characteristics associated with animals, such as the ability to move and breathe. This hierarchical structure and inheritance mechanism are conceptually analogous to class hierarchies and inheritance in object-oriented programming, facilitating knowledge organization and reuse.
Step 4: Encode Knowledge as Axioms (Formalization)
The fourth and central step in knowledge engineering is encoding knowledge as axioms. This is where the informal knowledge and conceptual vocabulary developed in the preceding steps are translated into a set of formal axioms, typically expressed in first-order logic or a suitable knowledge representation language. This step is often considered the core of knowledge engineering, as it involves the precise and unambiguous formalization of domain knowledge.
The process of axiom encoding is inherently iterative and often leads to revisiting earlier steps. As the knowledge engineer attempts to formalize knowledge, they frequently uncover gaps, inconsistencies, or ambiguities in the initial informal knowledge or vocabulary. This necessitates returning to steps 2 and 3 to refine the knowledge acquisition process, clarify concepts, and potentially expand the vocabulary or ontology. The act of formalization itself serves as a powerful form of knowledge validation and refinement.
Example 3. For the Wumpus World, consider encoding the relationship between pits and breezes. We might aim to express the rule: "A breeze is perceived in a location if and only if there is a pit in an adjacent location." This informal rule can be formalized as the following axiom in first-order logic:
∀ location. Breezy(location) ↔ ∃ adjacentLocation. (Adjacent(location, adjacentLocation) ∧ Pit(adjacentLocation))
While attempting to write this axiom, we might realize that the concept of Adjacent needs to be explicitly defined and included in our vocabulary or ontology. Furthermore, we might decide to refine the notion of adjacency by introducing a more basic predicate, such as Offset(location1, location2, deltaX, deltaY), which specifies the relative offset between two locations. This could then be used to define Adjacent more formally, for example, as locations with an offset of (1, 0), (-1, 0), (0, 1), or (0, -1). The process of axiom encoding thus drives the refinement and elaboration of the vocabulary and ontology.
This step demands careful and precise formalization to ensure that the axioms accurately and completely capture the intended domain knowledge. Ambiguities or errors in axiom formulation can lead to incorrect inferences and system behavior. The knowledge engineer must possess a strong understanding of logic and knowledge representation formalisms to effectively perform this step.
Step 5: Encode Instance-Level Knowledge (Instantiation)
The fifth step is encoding instance-level knowledge, also referred to as describing specific problem instances or instantiation. While the previous step focused on encoding general domain knowledge as axioms, this step involves describing the particular details of a problem instance or scenario within the domain. This is achieved by populating the knowledge base with facts that describe the specific situation at hand.
Example 4. Continuing with the Wumpus World example, to describe a particular game scenario, we would encode specific facts about the locations of pits, the Wumpus, and the agent’s starting position. For instance, we might have the following facts:
Pit(Location_1_3): "There is a pit at location (1, 3)."Wumpus(Location_3_1): "The Wumpus is located at location (3, 1)."AgentLocation(Location_1_1, Time_0): "The agent’s location at time 0 (initial position) is (1, 1)."
These facts represent a specific configuration of the Wumpus World, defining the locations of hazards and the initial state of the agent. These instance-specific facts, combined with the general axioms encoded in step 4, form the complete knowledge base for reasoning about this particular Wumpus World instance.
In traditional knowledge engineering scenarios, these instance descriptions were often manually entered by the knowledge engineer, based on a given problem description or scenario. However, in more modern and embodied AI systems, instance-level knowledge can be derived directly from sensor data. For example, in an Internet of Things (IoT) application, sensor readings from environmental sensors can provide real-time data about temperature, humidity, location, and other relevant parameters. This sensor data can then be automatically translated into facts and asserted into the knowledge base, providing a dynamic and up-to-date representation of the current situation. This integration of sensor data allows knowledge-based systems to operate in dynamic and real-world environments.
This step is generally straightforward if the preceding steps, particularly ontology definition, are well-defined. If the ontology lacks necessary concepts (e.g., Pit), we would need to revisit and extend it before describing instances involving pits.
Step 6: Query and Infer (Reasoning and Validation)
The sixth step is querying the knowledge base and performing inference. Once the knowledge base is constructed and populated with instance-specific facts, it becomes possible to utilize it to answer questions, solve problems, and derive new knowledge through inference. This step involves posing queries to the knowledge base and employing inference mechanisms to derive answers based on the encoded knowledge. This is where the knowledge base becomes an active reasoning system.
Queries are typically formulated using the same formal language as the axioms and facts, often using operations like Ask or AskVars (as discussed in previous lectures on logical inference). The inference engine, a core component of a knowledge-based system, then takes these queries and, using the axioms and facts in the knowledge base, attempts to logically derive answers. The inference process involves applying logical rules of inference (e.g., modus ponens, resolution) to deduce new facts and determine whether a given query is entailed by the knowledge base.
This step highlights a fundamental paradigm in AI and knowledge-based systems: solving problems declaratively, without explicitly programming the solution algorithm. In traditional programming, a programmer would explicitly write an algorithm, step-by-step instructions, to solve a specific problem. In knowledge engineering, the focus shifts to encoding the relevant knowledge about the problem domain in a declarative form (axioms and facts). The inference engine then acts as a general-purpose problem solver, capable of deriving solutions based on the provided knowledge, without requiring a problem-specific algorithm to be explicitly programmed.
Example 5. In the Wumpus World context, we might query the knowledge base to ask: "Is there a pit in location (1, 3)?" Using the fact Pit(Location_1_3) that we asserted in step 5, the inference engine can directly answer "Yes." More complex queries might involve asking: "Is it safe to move to location (1, 2) from (1, 1)?" Answering this query would require the inference engine to use both instance-level facts (e.g., agent’s current location) and general axioms (e.g., rules about pits and breezes, agent movement rules) to deduce whether moving to (1, 2) is safe, considering potential hazards.
In the context of our initial discussion about the Wumpus World agent, if we aim to build an agent that automatically solves the Wumpus World problem, we would encode axioms that describe the game rules, sensor perceptions, and possible actions. We would then query the knowledge base to determine the next best action for the agent to take in a given situation. The inference engine, through its reasoning process, would effectively "find a path to the goal" (finding gold and escaping) by utilizing the encoded knowledge, without us having to explicitly program a search algorithm. This declarative approach is a hallmark of knowledge-based AI.
The querying and inference step serves not only to obtain answers and solve problems but also as a crucial form of validation for the knowledge base itself. By posing relevant queries and examining the answers, we can assess whether the knowledge base is behaving as expected and whether it is capable of providing correct and useful inferences. Unexpected or incorrect answers often indicate errors or omissions in the knowledge base, prompting the need for debugging and refinement in the next step.
Step 7: Debug and Refine (Knowledge Base Maintenance)
The final step in the knowledge engineering process is debugging and refining the knowledge base. The initial knowledge base is unlikely to be perfect and will likely contain errors or omissions. Debugging involves identifying and correcting these issues through testing and evaluation.
Errors typically fall into two categories:
Missing Axioms: The knowledge base lacks necessary axioms, leading to unanswered queries or incomplete reasoning.
Incorrect Axioms: Axioms are wrongly formulated, leading to incorrect answers.
Example of a Subtle Error
Consider the axiom relating breezes and pits. If we incorrectly define it as a unidirectional implication:
∀ location. Breezy(location) → ∃ adjacentLocation. (Adjacent(location, adjacentLocation) ∧ Pit(adjacentLocation))
This axiom states that if there is a breeze, there must be an adjacent pit. However, it does not capture the converse: if there is a pit, there will be a breeze in adjacent locations. With this axiom, we can correctly infer the presence of pits from breezes, but we cannot infer the absence of pits from the absence of breezes. This subtle difference can be understood using the law of contraposition: \(A \rightarrow B\) is equivalent to \(\neg B \rightarrow \neg A\). The bi-implication (\(\leftrightarrow\)) is needed for complete and correct reasoning in both directions.
Example of an Incorrect Axiom
Consider the incorrect axiom: "All things with four legs are mammals." This is false because it doesn’t account for amphibians, reptiles, insects, or even inanimate objects like tables. Such errors arise from incomplete knowledge or overgeneralization during knowledge acquisition.
Modularity and Debugging
A key advantage claimed for knowledge engineering, compared to traditional programming, is the modularity of axioms. In principle, each axiom can be evaluated for correctness relatively independently. Unlike a line of code in a program, whose correctness often depends on the context of the entire program, an axiom’s validity can often be assessed by examining its logical content in relation to the domain knowledge it represents. For instance, to determine if the "four legs implies mammal" axiom is wrong, we don’t need to analyze the entire knowledge base; we just need to consider counterexamples in the real world. This modularity is seen as a strength, allowing for focused debugging and refinement of the knowledge base. However, this modularity is not absolute, and dependencies between axioms can still exist, which will be discussed further in the next lecture.

Semantic Networks
Introduction to Semantic Networks: A Graphical Knowledge Representation
Semantic networks emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s as a prominent alternative to first-order logic for representing knowledge in artificial intelligence systems. The primary motivation behind their development was to create a knowledge representation formalism that is more intuitive and human-friendly than predicate logic. While first-order logic provides a powerful and unambiguous system for representing knowledge, its formal syntax, reliance on quantifiers, and abstract nature can be challenging for humans to directly grasp and manipulate, especially when dealing with complex knowledge domains. Semantic networks, in contrast, offer a graphical notation that aims to mirror human conceptual structures, using visual elements to represent concepts and their interrelations. This visual approach was intended to enhance readability, facilitate knowledge acquisition, and simplify the process of knowledge base construction and maintenance for human knowledge engineers.
At its core, a semantic network represents knowledge as a graph, a mathematical structure composed of nodes and arcs (or edges). In the context of semantic networks:
Nodes serve as the fundamental building blocks, representing concepts, entities, objects, or categories within the domain of knowledge. Nodes can represent concrete objects like "Mary" or "John," abstract concepts like "Person" or "Mammal," or even events and actions.
Arcs (or edges) are directed connections between nodes, visually depicting the relationships that hold between the concepts represented by the nodes they connect. The directionality of arcs is crucial, indicating the nature of the relationship from one concept to another.
Labels play a vital role in adding specificity and clarity to the representation. Arc labels are used to explicitly define the type of relationship that an arc represents, such as "is-a," "part-of," "agent-of," or "sister-of." Node labels can also be used to further categorize or describe the concepts represented by the nodes themselves, although this is less common than arc labeling.
This graphical approach, utilizing nodes and labeled arcs, was perceived as offering several advantages, particularly in terms of accessibility and manageability, especially when dealing with large and complex knowledge bases. The visual nature of semantic networks was thought to make knowledge representation more transparent and understandable to humans, potentially bridging the gap between human conceptualization and formal knowledge representation in AI systems.
Knowledge Representation in Semantic Networks: Nodes, Arcs, and Relationships
Semantic networks employ a visual vocabulary of nodes and labeled arcs to encode diverse types of knowledge. The expressiveness of semantic networks stems from the way these basic components are combined and interpreted.
Nodes: Representing Conceptsand Instances
Nodes in semantic networks are the visual representations of concepts, categories, and individual instances. They are typically depicted as simple graphical shapes, most commonly ovals or circles, although rectangles or other shapes can also be used depending on the specific notation. As illustrated in Figure [fig:semantic_network_example], examples of nodes include:
Categories or Classes: Nodes like "People," "Mammals," "Women," and "Men" represent categories or classes of entities. These nodes denote sets of individuals sharing common properties.
Individual Instances: Nodes such as "Mary" and "John" represent specific individuals or instances belonging to certain categories. These are concrete entities within the domain.
Attribute Values: Nodes like "1" and "2" (in the context of "Legs" property) can represent specific attribute values or quantities associated with concepts or instances.
Abstract Concepts: Nodes can also represent more abstract concepts, actions, events, or even relations themselves, depending on the complexity and purpose of the semantic network.
Arcs: Depicting Relationships with Labels
Arcs, visually represented as directed arrows, are the connections between nodes that encode the relationships between the concepts they link. The crucial aspect of arcs in semantic networks is that they are labeled. These arc labels explicitly specify the type or nature of the relationship being represented. The labels are typically short, descriptive terms that indicate the semantic connection between the source and target nodes of the arc. In Figure [fig:semantic_network_example], we observe various types of labeled arcs:
Subset-of(or Is-a, Subclass-of): Arcs labeled "Subset-of" (or variations like "Is-a" or "Subclass-of") represent category-subcategory relationships. For example, the arc from "Women" to "People" labeled "Subset-of" indicates that "Women" is a subcategory or subclass of "People," meaning every woman is also a person. Similarly, "People" is a "Subset-of" "Mammals."Member-of(or Instance-of): Arcs labeled "Member-of" (or "Instance-of") represent instance-category relationships. The arc from "Mary" to "Women" labeled "Member-of" signifies that "Mary" is an instance or member of the category "Women." Likewise, "John" is a "Member-of" "Men."Property Relationships: Arcs can also represent properties or attributes of concepts or instances. In Figure [fig:semantic_network_example], "Legs" arcs are used to indicate the number of legs.
